Wildcards..

I am trying to write an IF formula that says

=IF(a1="*",1,0)

Where the * is absolutely anything (a number, text etc..)

I presume the formula is just looking for an asterisk within the cell but I
want it to pick up that the cell contains anything.

Any ideas?

one way:
=IF(A1<>"",1,0)

or
