How do I connect to a wireless access point, if I do not
know the SSID? I run into non-technical people at some
coffee shops that advertise WiFi access. All they know is
that it works with Windows XP. Well this older laptop has
Windows 2000 installed on it. My Linksys WPC11 Wireless-B
Notebook Adapter connects well to hotel and coffee shop
networks as long as I know the SSID.

How does XP work without knowing an SSID for connection?
The answer may be too long for an email reply, but if you
could point me to a technical article I would appreciate
it.

Note: I tried following the advise of KB article 313664.
It requires the older SP3, but I already have SP4
installed for Windows 2000.

Most (all?) free public access points broadcast the SSID. Your adapter
software should have a scan feature to discover these. If not, check the
Linksys web site; they may have an update that gives you this capability.
