Wifi question

I recently acquired a used tablet PC with wifi. I have tried a few
times to connect to an open network, such as you will find at cafes
and coffee shops. I see packets going out, but none coming in. After
a bit of searching I think I found the problem. The prior owner has
it configured apprently for his ISP or office, including DNS and such.

I know very little about networking in Windows XP. My question is,
how do I clear the network settings and set this up so I can simply
access an open wifi network?

Thanks in advance!

The simplest to start with would be to automatically obtain IP and DNS settings.

Does the computer have Ethernet too? It's a lot easier to start by using
Ethernet, where all that you have to worry with is IP. Getting WiFi, and IP
connectivity, to work simultaneously, can be an eXPerience.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

It sounds as if all you have to do is go into the control panel, then network
connections. Then right click on the wireless network icon and then left
click on properties. Double click Internet Protocol(TCP/IP).
It sound s like there should be IP address set manually in there. Just click
the button that says Automatically obtain IP Address, and then below, click
the button that says Automatically Obtain DNS information. Click OK, then OK
again.
Hopefully that helps resolve your problem
