Hello Gurus,
I have win2k sp2 box(pentium450MH).
It was infected with some viruses lately,I ran norton anivirus onthe
machine from the safe mode.
It deleted about all but 2 infected files.
Now when I try to run start up the machine,it shows the screen where it says
"loading your personal settings"
and then goes back to password screen( unfortunately its setup as to
trust one user so it does not require pass) and comes back to the
"loading your personal settings"
For some reasons its running an infinte loop at these points and not
being able to actually load the windows.I tried loading "Safe Mode" but
same happens there as well an infinite loop between the 2 mentioned
points above.
I would reinstall windows, but data is too important,I'd really, really
appreciate if some one can help me fix this problem.
I have already tried to run "Repair" setup disks

Thanks

This typically happens when hard disks are changed. Before you
change disks, delete any inappropriate or non-existing devices
as per Step 2 below.
1. From dos, copy userinit.exe to all the other hard drives
This should allow you to log in.
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/MountedDevices/:
delete all keys which look like "\DosDevice\<DRIVE_LETTER>:"
3. Point KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/
Winlogon/Userinit to the correct location of userinit.exe
See also http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=249321

You can also edit the registry of the problem machine via
a network connection to point the paging file back to where
it belongs:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\
Memory Management

You could also try and log on under a different account.

Lastly: It seems you like to live dangerously. If you have
important files then you must back them up at least every
week. If you don't back them up then they are not important -
because you're prepared to lose them. Today I replaced a
20 GByte hard disk for a client. It had failed catastrophically,
and he too did not believe in backups. He now does. In his
case, the lesson was very painful.
