Hi!

I have tons of patches (some post-SP2) on my xp machine. I feel like they introduced more backdoors then ever. One example, maybe it is my paranoia but when you Search for files why does it want to connect to the internet. My ZoneAlarm pops up with this:

Destination IP: 19y.xxx.0.1: DNS (in fact this is my gateway)
Application: explorer.exe
Version: 6.00.2900.2180(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

If I deny with zone alarm, the search wont work at all till reboot, or reload of explorer.exe. Is this a normal post sp2 behaviour?

Your help is much appreciated,
Kob Uki

Looks like its sending a DNS request to your gateway (192.168.0.1 is a private IP address that is not routeable over the Internet... not necessary to obscure it by the way- it doesn't identify you at all--- millions of people probably have devices with that IP and its only valid on their own networks)

This request may be related to the automatic update functionality of the Search Companion. See the thread below about that. It's not really a sign of a particular problem but some might see it as a privacy issue.
