I recently purchased a new computer, a Dell 3.2 mhz
Pentium 4 Extreme Edition (2 gb ram). My internet
conection is not cable or DSL, it is still a dial up 56k
modem. I am trying to determine if I want to use
Microsofts Windows automatic updates, scheduled updates or
just be notified of available updates. If I use automatic
updates, how often, generally, do updates occur and how
much time, on average, can I expect the download to take
on my 56k modem? Are there other considerations that might
affect my decision? If it matters, the work I do on the
computer (ray-trace rendering) is extremely processor/ram
intensive so I do not like to have a download running in
the background while I am working. Thanks for your help!

I personally would say forget about all updates apart from the one for the
blaster virus. I have been running my computer for ages without any more
updates at all!! As long as you have a good firewall (Zonealarm) and some
good anti-virus (Norton) I wouldnt worry about security threats. Updates
just fix things that dont need fixed nd clog up your system.

Jake downloading updates does slow up the works
I suggest updating windows XP While doing other chores like - washing the car or sleeping
I suggest running a stay on line program such as freeware AC plug by Iopu
Download the recommended updates firs
Running a FIREWALL is also recommended XP DOES HAVE ONE, but I also run Sygate personal firewall (spf.exe
Its a tough world out there

Dave;
The Automatic Option is a valuable tool, however it can be a problem
for those like you on dial-up.
I would suggest you schedule to check and install updates weekly.
Put it on a calendar if necessary.

A firewall does NOT replace the necessity for updates or antivirus.
Those three things along with a healthy dose of common sense go a long
way to thoroughly protecting your computer.
