Ok. A customer of mine recently started having trouble with this service
on a Windows XP SP1 machine:
(WIA) Windows Image Aquisition Service.

About 2 weeks ago, she installed an HP PSC 2510 Photosmart All-in-one
wireless printer. She also has a Canon Powershot A40 that's been
installed for some time. Both pieces of equipment rely on this service to
operate correctly.

The service didn't quit working imediately after installing the printer, so
I am having a hard time thinking that it was the cause. I checked the
system error logs and the service quit loading approximate 6-7 days
afterwards.

So the reason the customer noticed was because everytime you would click on
My Computer, the flashlight would spin for 3-4 minutes and then the drives
would come up. After checking on the Microsoft support site, it said that
the WIA service was the cause of this and to shut it down. That's fine
and all, except now the camera and scanner portion of the printer don't
work. I tried downloading the updated Canon drivers from their website
because it said it included an updated WIA service, but I still can't get
the service to load.

ANY help or suggestions on how to get this service to start loading again
would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all in advance.

From articles/reviews I've seen on the HP it's likely going to be the
fault of the HP drivers/software. Customer reviews are not good for it,
when the Pro/Con ratings are split 50-50.
Without knowing the particulars, I would uninstall all the HP "Junk"
that loads at startup. I think I read somewhere that the software for
it can load upwards of 400-Megabytes.
If it possible, I would re-install the unit but only with "Core" drivers &
leave all the Watchdog/Startups off.
It could be that some of HP's tools/monitors are starting before the
Windows Image Acquisition service. I really dislike 3rd party vendors
installing apps & tools that XP can handle natively.

charlie,
please read my post under printing and faxing groups
named hp 4110 all in one, it describes what i had to do
to get my hp to work, basically there is a conflict with
hp director and the WIA service. if the software is
loaded correctly, try and boot the computer with the
printer turned off, then after log on turn the printer on.
please post what you find out, the hp problem is poorly
documented. I'm trying to hopefully let everyone know
what the problems are. thanks
