I am having some sort of a problem with the service Window Image Acquisition.
When the service is running any dropdown menu whether in windows or IE locks
up for a couple of minutes and if I open up My Computer it will search for
the folders for about 2 mins before they are visible. If I stop the service
in msconfig and reboot, everything is fine. Is this service necessary??? If
so, what steps can I take to correct the problem

I suggest you change settings of services via Control Panel > Administrative
Tools > Services. There, by clicking on the Services you wish to edit will
show its description on the top left pane and on the description colum.
Double click on the service and it will show its properties. You can also try
to set the start up type to manual rather than completely stopping the
service (General tab).
