I recently bought a new laptop and I'm interested in using it at the Wi-Fi
hotspots. What am I going to need to make it ready and how do I tell if the
necessary stuff is already installed? TIA for any information and advice
..

Read the User's Guide that came with your new laptop.
Also visit the support website of the manufacturer of your
laptop for technical specifications and features.

I saw your other reply so thought I'd give you some "real"
help. First you will need to get a wi-fi network card.
For a laptop you have two choices USB or PCMIA. I would
suggest getting one that supports 802.11g. They have the
higher transfer rates. I'm not going to suggest one over
another. I have a D-Link and it works fine, but as long
as you get one supporting 11g, you should be okay. They
are easy to install. Once installed and setup with
default settings, you should be able to see most open wi-
fi networks. As for "hot spots" that have wi-fi, a lot of
airports, some Starbucks and various other places have
them. Do a web seach for wi-fi hot spots and you should
come up with some. Hope this helps.
Good luck.
