why would scardsvr.exe start running?

I've never seen it running in task manager before, and I don't have any kind
of smart card device...don't really know what it is. But today it just
started running as a process, I didn't see it doing anything and I checked
it on Virustotal.com and it was perfectly clean. But still, what would have
given it permission to run? Any ideas...

Adminstrative Tools -> Services and disable/stop it if you don't use it.
