Why would feature set shrink?

Windows Mail has fewer features than Outlook (or Eudora) which is maddening.
I want the ability to rename received emails for clearer archiving purposes.

I used to be able to paste pics straight into emails; now they have to be
saved files first.

WinMail descended from Outlook Express, not Outlook. OE never had that
feature.
