Why won't my laptop automatically find it's IP address or share an internet connection

Hi Folks!

I'm trying to get my laptop (running Windows XP Pro SP2) to share an
internet connection via my desktop machine. The Shared Internet Connection
feature on my desktop has been enabled and it's IP address automatically
changed to 192.168.0.1. The other machines on the LAN are able to share the
internet connection. That internet connection is via a dial-up modem - my
only option in this rural area.

I can connect my laptop either wirelessly or via a wired connection to the
LAN. However, in either case, the laptop does not determine that the it's IP
address should be 192.168.0.x. OK, I can manually set it to a conforming IP
address such as 192.168.0.223. At that point, the laptop can 'talk' to the
other machines on the network. However, I can't get the laptop to use the
LAN connection for its internet access despite having run the Internet
Connection Setup Wizard (multiple times). The other machines on the network
(running Windows 2000) share the connection with my primary desktop machine
(running Windows XP Pro SP 2) without difficulty.

I've run browstat and cdiag and tried to interpret the results, but didn't
learn anything useful. Does anybody have any hints for me?

Robert,

Post the results here, maybe we can see what you need to look at next. CDiag
doesn't present all the clues very obviously, sometimes you have to look at them
in several ways.
