Why won't my gif play in my slide show?

I am using Microsoft PowerPoint. I have a .gif image that plays fine when I
open it, however, when I put it in my slide show, it won't play. I have tried
clicking on it and animating it, but nothing works. I would like to be able
to view the .gif file in the powerpoint without having to make a hyperlink to
the file.
 
PowerPoint version?

And if that is 2000 or newer: One iteration or endlessly repeated?
 
Not mention: Are you in edit view or slide show view? thee gif will only
animate if you are viewing the presentation.
