hi

my computer recently died :( and i cannot for the life of me figure
out what is wrong with it. I havent changed anything or installed any
new devices that i can think of. The fan will start the screen will
come on but then flick back onto standby because there is no input
signal present. Obviously i thought this would be a graphics card
problem but i have tried the graphics card in another machine and it
works fine, i have also tried another graphics card in the dead
machine and it does the same, i wondered if it would be a faulty
power supply so i changed that and still no joy. I have tried
removing all the other cards sound/wireless and even the Ram and
re-seating them all but it still will not start. after a while the
machine simply looses its power, cuts out and will not start for a
few minutes. I cant even get into the bios as there is nothing
present on the screen and it goes off too quickly to do anything. I
have tried removing the battery to clear CMOS but again this doesnt
seem to have made any difference. I was just wondering what i can try
next or if anyone has any idea what could be the probelm as this ivery
frustrating as you can imagine!

any help would be much appreciated! :)

Most likely the motherboard has died.

Check for bad caps. These are the usually blue or black plastic covered round
post like things that stick up vertically from the motherboard surface. The tops
should be flat and if any have bulged or have leaked, thats the problem.

Even if the caps look fine, its still almost certainly the motherboard that
has gone bad. If you plan to replace it instead of just buying a new system,
try running with the motherboard loose on the desktop just before you buy
a new one. You can get a short to case and that is the best check for that.

After building my own pc with many trial and errors I can tell you
many things can go wrong that unless your an expert can baffle you. The
power supply died on me all of a sudden but smelling an odor coming
from the unit gave me a hint it was just the PSU.
Not sure what my next system will be but it will be factory built. lol

Removing the battery isn't enough to clear CMOS. You must also short a
jumper (somewhere near the CMOS battery) to the "clear_CMOS" position and
leave it that way for a while. This is so that you can change the CMOS
battery (if you are quick enough) WITHOUT losing CMOS settings.

However, I don't have much hope that clearing CMOS will help you in this
case. A computer must run POST before any video card (even onboard video)
will be initialized. A computer that does not run POST has a very serious
problem, usually. You've already ruled out the most likely suspect by
changing the power supply. Next most likely suspects would be CPU and
mainboard, unfortunately. -Dave

How about describing your system. I recall having several systems
portray quite similar, if not identical symptoms as yours, with distinct
causes. With a good description oof your system, I'd be happy to check my
records to determine what fixed the system-and-problem similar to yours. I
have fairly good summaries of past fixes (and failures?). Thx, s
