Why won't my backspace key delete a word while I'm in MS WORD?

I was working in Word today, when suddenly my backspace key would not enable
me to delete a selected word. The back space key does work in this
field--just not in Word.

Any thought
 
In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.

thanks Garfield - I could find no answer to this maddening and illogical problem in Word 2004 for the Mac till I saw your response. How Microsoft could so misdescribe a Preference check is amazing
