Why won't DVD players for TV show more than 300 jpg's on TV

My question concerns unexplained limitations after burning various
series of digital camera's jpg pics exceeding a quantity of 300 onto
any CD for viewing on any TV using different but compatible DVD
players. It seems the DVD players (most brands) stop showing the pics
after a limited number. It seems to be somewhere around 300, no matter
what the folder names or file names are, no matter what size the
files (pics) are. What is the limited number and why?
