Why WindowsXP does not accept the correct NIC driver?

I have a serious problem with my PC.
I had to format my disk and reinstall Windows XP (with SP2), but I can not
get to in web because Windows thinks that my network card is of Asound, but
its of Realtek.

I tried doing update driver using the Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast
Ethernet Card driver on the device manager.
I tried uninstalling the driver, and then letting Windows find it again.
I tried downloading new driver from the Internet (using another PC).

But came out Asound. Windows simply does not let me change the driver.

I logged in with Administrator account.

I talked with the my ISP service provider, and they also found that the
trouble is with my NIC.

How can I force Windows use the driver that has on a disk, and not the
built-in Asound?

I'm sorry. you are probably right. But I'm desperate with this problem and
couldn't find the exact discussion gruop to post it on.

When you go to change the driver, don't pick automatic pick the Advanced
option. Then tell it not to search, but that you will choose which driver to
install. Then click on the have disk button and browse to the driver files
you have downloaded.

Make sure that you have extracted the files provided by the manufacturer and
that the directory you browse to has the .sys, .inf and .cat files rather
than a self installing.exe. This way you can force it to use whatever driver
you want.

I have already tried that, but still the ASound remains and the NIC is not
working properly (getting wrong IP 169....).

Really?

its of Realtek.

Please post PCI-ID of the device. You get it in properties of unknown
device in device manager. Its in the details tab

This will really tell which vendor made that device.

You may also look for the used chip on the nic card to identify it.

LOL. If you can configure the device, the driver is installed.

You just don' t get an IP address automatically via DHCP in this case.
APIPA uses a random IP address in 169.254.x.x/16 when no DHCP-Server is
reachable. This is not a hardware oder driver issue!

Check if there really is a DHCP-Server available on the network. If not,
configure IP address manually.

The device is installed, but a wrong device is installed.
I clearly remember that I had the same problem when I initially installed
the NIC card and Windows installed a wrong driver for it, and only after I
manually installed the correct driver (Realtek) that I get with the NIC on a
floppy, the Internet starts working.

The NIC is connected to a cable modem (Thompson...) which should provide the
IP address.
The cable modem is reachable, so a valid IP address should be set.

I strongly believe it's a driver issue.
On the floppy I have, which I received with the NIC card when I bought it,
there is a ReadMe file that says 'Realtek RTL8139-810X Family PCI Fast
Ethernet Card'.
But when I try to update/install the driver for WinXP, it remains Asound and
does not change to Realtek, therefore; the problem remains.

I think I simply need to force Windows to accept and replace to the Realtek
driver, but I fail to do so.

I will check PCI-ID as you posted (when I'll be at home), and get back to you.

In Hardware Devices, NIC >Properties>Driver>Driver Details
so what does it tell you for the various driver files?

Ok, it's working now.

After boot to safe mode and removing the driver, and the restarting again
and manually updating the driver to my specific INF file which I have with
the NIC itself. And it's working.

Thank you for you kind help

The fact it is *working* does not squash the curiosity...
Can you post the requested information (from above?)

which info do you want me to post?

Notice I have quoted everything so the integrity of what we are talking
about is maintained.

The question that DL asked you is included.

In case you still do not see it/understand it - this is what you should
post:

Open Device Manager:
Start button --> RUN --> devmgmt.msc --> OK

Find and click on "Network Adapters" and expand it (click on the + sign).

1) Post a list of ALL Network Adapters under that category.
2) For the one that you believe is your main network adapter, double-click
on its name in the list in Device Manager.
3) From the Properties window that opens - click on the 'Driver' tab at the
top.
4) From the 'Driver' tab view - click on 'Driver Details'.
5) Post here everything you see in the new window (inside the white area
*and* underneath where it gives 'Provider', 'File Version', etc.)
6) Click OK.
7) OK your way out to the 'Device Manager' main window.
8) Close Device Manager.

An easy way to get a LOT of data...
(alternative)

Start button --> RUN --> MSINFO32 --> OK
- In the 'System Information' window - expand (click on the + sign next to)
Components.
- In the 'Components' sub-categories - click on the + sign next to
'Network'.
- In the 'Network' sub-categories - click on 'Adapter' to select it.
- From the top menu, select 'File' --> 'Export'.
- In the 'Export As' window that opens, click on the 'Desktop' icon on the
left side.
- Give it some filename you'll recognize.
- Click on 'Save'.
- Close the 'System Information' window.
- Find the text file on the desktop, open it and click inside it like you
were going to edit it.
- Press CTRL+A.
- Press CTRL+C.
- In a response message to this thread, in the body, press CTRL+V.
- Send the response.

Ok, here is the info (Sorry, I didn't put much attention to the new posts
after the problem was resolved):
