Why the re-boot...?

Howdy,

I have had this experience a few times, but would love to
understand it:

For the last few days, I stayed at a hotel that offered an
Internet connection with the cost of the room.

I logged on with no trouble, but the following day, was
dropped from the network.

I ran IPCONFIG /release, then /renew and had what looked to
be a proper IP address, but still could not log on.

Only a re-boot could solve the problem.

Exactly the same think happened each day.

And so, this question:

What is happening with the re-boot that is distinct from the
results of the release-renew cycle of IPCONFIG?

Sincere thanks for any information on this,

Hard to say not knowing how the hotels has their system designed. Maybe it
uses the MAC address of your machine to keep a record of how long you are on
the Net (even if they don't charge extra). If the machine is left running
the session (which may be "timed out") continues inspite of the IPCONFIG
which only changes the IP# not the MAC address.

Rebooting the machine would totally kill the session and create a new one
because the MAC address "diappeared" and "came back" again.

Just a wild guess on my part. Hotels use some type of variation of
"Internet Cafe Software" to run their systems and I don't have much
expeience with them. Hotels typically don't have skilled IT people working
for them, so they buy these things from Vendors and it may be maintain
(maybe even monitored) by the same vendor.
