Why Switch From XP?

For the average user Switching to Vista mayl bring problems as
companies update drivers for their products. Considering all the
devices people now use, these can be a long list . Joysticks, mice,
scanners, cameras, video cards and sound cards. If you have XP and all
your applications, games, drives work...do yourself a favor and stay
away from Vista for now.

My scanner will never work with Vista... HP wont be upgrading all its
drivers....
I will have to get a new one....

I agree, and if Vista is in a user's future, he/she should start collecting
Vista compatible drivers as they become available. If one intends to upgrade
their existing hardware, they should make sure it is adequate as is, or
capable of being upgraded to an adequate level. One of my laptops, for
example, has a maximum allowed RAM capacity of only 512 MB, so the
motherboard would have to be replaced, and that (even in the unlikely event
that an upgrade motherboard is available) is not economically feasible.

Because there is plenty of Vista certified hardware available today.

It's up to YOU to decide if you're ready.

If you are then great! If not then wait!

I agree. Vista is a whole new ball game and a radical change from XP and all
its predecessors. It's never any fun being on the bleeding edge of
technology, even if you're a technical person. If you really want to get
into Vista, you'd do well to dual-boot with XP or some other older more
established OS. You don't want to be totally dependent on Vista this early
in the game.

5. my 4 year old broadband modem works
6. my 6 year old trackball works
7. my 5 year old keyboard works
8. my 8 year old serial finger printer reader works

10. my digital cameras all work via firewire
11. my 4 year old fancy pro grade audio card works
12. my 2 year old USB pen (for drawing in Photoshop) works
13. my 1 year old multi read DVD burner works

Messenger and MSN Network keeps trying to install itself, but I never
asked it too.

Pretty good considering. <wink>

Or install Linux.

Be like going from a 2004 Hummer to a 1950 Nash rambler.

Whether someone should upgrade to vista depends on their needs.
Just because there is a new operating system in and of itself is not a
good enough reason.
There should be some expected benefit before starting the upgrade
process.
If everything works and you can do what you need how you need, there
is no reason to upgrade.

This has applied to all operating systems from all sources not just
Microsoft.
This also applies to any and all software and hardware upgrades
whether from Microsoft or another manufacturer.

Most people do not need to upgrade and thus should wait until Windows
Vista comes with their new computer.

What you say is true but I've found that most products have drivers (except
for HP and Nvidia). I installed Vista everything works except my printer,
which to be honest, is about due to be retired. I've been pricing printers
and have found that the newer ink carts are cheaper and use less ink that
what I've been using so this maybe a blessing in disguise.

Many people consider Vista to be a wild tangent headed straight for a
brick wall. I will conttinue on with a mix of XP and Linux and in ten
years when support for XP dies and Microsoft has been
reduced to packing cheese sticks, I'll switch to the new operating
system "Google 2017 WOW".

Switch from XP if:

1. You KNOW, beyond doubt, there are "good" drivers for your existing hw.
2. You're willing to take the time and effort to do a clean install, going
bare metal, i.e., formatting HD and starting from scratch. That means
backing up data and reinstalling software.
3. You look forward to an OS that uses DirectX to draw the desktop, not for
Aero, although that's cool, but because it decouples the video from the OS
kernel and if your video drivers are buggy, i.e., nVidia, then video crashes
won't bring the system to its knees.
4. You want a more secure system and are willing to deal with UAC and
actually read its dialog boxes that ask "r u sure you want to run
deleteCdrive.exe?" before you hit the Enter key.

Do NOT switch from XP if:

1. You don't have a clue whether there are drivers for your hardware.
2. You think upgrading your OS is acceptable and will be problem free.
(LOL!)
3. You couldn't care less if the video chores are decoupled from the OS
kernel.
4. You think actually reading a dialog box and clicking an OK button every
once in a while is a huge imposition on your time and intellect.

I will :-)

nah... its ok... I will use the scanner on my second computer or gift it to
someone in need.....

I want to get a small scanner-printer machine.

thanks for your help though

Nah, I have a old HP 5470c scanner, HP said no support for vista. Installed
the XP driver (Precisionscan Pro 3.1) and it works fine, gave a few errors
on install, but, after a reboot, it works fine (and I use it a lot). Also a
old modem (that is used for an answering machine), no vista support but,
installed the XP driver, works perfect.

When in doubt, try the XP driver...
