Why still no REINSTALL capability for Windows Movie Maker 2

Why does Microsoft continue to refuse to provide a reinstall capability for
Windows Movie Maker 2. Most complaints about WMM2 revolve around the ability
for later installed 3rd party applications to corrupt the driver and registry
settings of WMM2.

Why does Microsoft not provide a simple Verify and Reinstall application
which could be downloaded to run and perform this function ?
Such a method could indeed verify that the user already possesses a
pre-existing copy of WMM2 and thus there would be no question of the right
the user would have to own WMM2 in the first place.

Most users are not interested in thefurther corruption of their system which
comes from removing and then reinstalling all of Windows XP SP2.
That is a radical change to the system and removes many Updates, most
Updates from Microsoft, which have occurred since the release of Windows XP
SP2, including of course the release of Windows XP SP3.
Reinstalling Windows Movie Maker should be simplified.

We have no idea why Microsoft does anything...
all we can do is attempt to offer some ideas on
solving problems.

When was 2.0 released ? Along with SP2 or was that before ?
Will WMM2.0 auto-Update to 2.1, if it is overwritten on top of a damaged 2.1 ?
I do not believe there is a way to remove the 2.1 first, before overwriting
with the 2.0 you mention.

===========================
It's an old 2003 version...you asked
about it so I offered the link.

Here's some info:

Release Notes for Windows Movie Maker 2

Before SP2...

SP2 installs Movie Maker 2.1

Will WMM2.0 auto-Update to 2.1, if it is overwritten on top of a
damaged 2.1 ?
===========================
If you read the articles I posted for you...
you can see the following info from Dean Rowe:

"One of the reasons we pulled MovieMaker
2.0 from the Microsoft download site was
that you could run into problems if you tried
to install MovieMaker 2.0 when you already
had MovieMaker 2.1 installed with SP2. As
the MovieMaker 2.0 setup was written before
SP2 existed it doesn't know to not try to overwrite 2.1. "

first, before overwriting with the 2.0 you mention.

Read the info I posted about repairing MM2.1

Good luck...

Does the Windows XP application SFC check the version numbers of these WMM
files your page mentions, and if not, why not ?

I am finding that since installing some Hauppauge software, I am not able to
save av files to the disk. The save page just hangs at 3% completion, and
the minutes to completion increment into the 1,000s after a few minutes.
I have checked it with some old files which I successfully rendered to files
before, but now those input av files hang it in this way.
Somehow the WMM2.1 rendering has been messed up.

I cannot see that my info is helping you...

Maybe someone else can help you sort it out.

I found the problem. I installed and then uninstalled a set of codecs, but
WMM2 was not aware that the pathnames to those codecs no longer were valid.
Apparently that is how WMM2 responds to that error condition. An output file
Save hang, while the minutes escalate.
This BUG should be Fixed in Windows Movie Maker 2.
