Hi, I'm having a general problem with installing windows xp sp2.

You don't really need to know the details, but if you want to look,
check here.

However, I have a general question about the windows xp install CD.

When it boots, it says detecting hardware, and then the screen goes
permanently black. I don't even make it past the first screeen.

My asus Mobo site says the problem may be SATA drivers which I need to
install via floppy drive.

But shouldn't Windows at least prompt you for SATA or RAID drivers? In
my case, it's just going blank without prompting the user for anything.
Is that unusual? Does that suggest a more basic problem?

Or does the install CD just check the floppy drive automatically for
drivers whenever it hangs on certain hardware?

(For the record, I was able to install linux easily on this same
system).

When the CD first boots during the blue screen portion at the bottom it flashes press F6 if you need
to install scsi/raid, press F6 here it will stop in a little bit and prompt you for drivers.

Yes, I never got that far.

the problem is that I don't have a floppy drive (although I could
easily add one).. (Or I could do a slipstream CD

My concern is that i never got to the point where it asks you need to
install scsci/raid.

I'm pretty sure the issue is SATA drivers (my motherboard didn't have
built in support for it), but I just thought it strange that Windows
would just freeze instead of prompting me.

I haven't switched to the promise SATA controller yet, and I'll try a
few things on the motherboard, but I just want to hear what standard
behavior of the install CD is.

So to rephrase my question to make it Windows centric: Normal XP
Install behavior is to start hw detection, then offer the user a prompt
to add drivers via floppy? So if Windows is not doing this, then the
problem must be with the MOBO/bios/jumper settings?

That is one of the first things it asks for, it is right at the start of the CD boot process. After
the press any key to boot from CD a blue screen will start up and it is right here. It flashes by
quick so you have to be watching.
