It looks like those are the actual image files used to make the folders
look the way they do, and they are greyed out because they are marked
"hidden", but you have made Windows show hidden and system files.
Thanks both, that's clearly the explanation.
Could I push my luck with a follow-up please?
Those hidden files all have file names like
AlbumArt_{FCD42225-0414-4BB9-9A58-5B3EC30B1FAA}_Large.jpg
Opening that example in an image viewer or editor shows me a 200 x 198
pixel image of the cover for The Beatles: Past Masters - Volume 2.
When and how were such files created, WMP9? What purpose do they
serve; just to display album art in WMP9, and no other player?
In that example, the file is in the folder
D:\My Music\The Beatles\Past Masters, Vol. 2
together with another hidden file for the 75 x 74 pixel image, so it's
no surprise that it's that cover art. But there's also a file called
Folder.jpg, which is identical to the larger hidden file. What is the
likely origin of *that*, and what is its purpose? Is one or the other
redundant?
Finally, I have a collection of such hidden files, from various
downloads, which at the moment I'm keeping in case they help me with
'tag detective work'. Is that a common practice?
