Why so unreliable

Why is Messenger so %^&* unreliable ???

I feel like throwing my machine through the window.

Trying to communicate with the SAME person from the same machines.
Both of us have DSL
Nothing changes for either of us (software or hardware)

Some days we can connect straight away
but most of the time Messenger simply fails to connect either voice or
video.

What gives?

Tell us more. NAT devices involved? Firewalls? A straight Internet
connection without either a NAT device, or a firewall, should work; unless
one of your ISPs is doing something out of the ordinary.
 
I have a very similar problem. Two of us attempting to connect - we try both
directions.

Both ends using PlusNet ADSL - via LAN

Both using DrayTek 2600 routers

No software firewalls

Win SP2 both ends

Both run McAfee Virus Scan

Sometimes voice / video work but most times not. Chat always works. Most
recently we cant transfer files either (which was working recently)

What gives with this flaky system?

Since you're using routers (dher NAT in involved) have you tried enabling
uPnP?
 
UpNp enabled on our routers - we both have fixed IPs also (if that makes a
difference).

Does MSN say that UPnP is enabled?

Go to Tools > Options > Connection.

If UPnP is enabled then you should have "You are connected to the Internet
through a UPnP IP restricted NAT" ...or something to that effect :)
 
Adam, I am using Win Messenger and there is no setting in the software to
select UpNp, though the menus you suggest result in a statement

You are connected to .NET messenger Service using a direct connection (no
firewall)

Auto detect internet connection is selected.
