I have a simple lan, small hub, ethernet card...Win2k box<--->Compaq
Laptop w/Win98se. It works great.

I download from the Web with the lapper, hook up the laptop to the 2k
and transfer data to the big box----

and usually "Laptop" can't be found...

I have to reboot the laptop for it to be "seen".

Not always, but it is rare that it is seen with out rebooting (the lapper).

1. Why? (not always?)
2. Is there a way to "refresh" the connection? (No, logging off doesn't
help, nor does dis-re-connectiong the W2k from/to the network.)

It's not a big deal, but there must be an easiet solution than
re-booting the lapper (I think I've tried everything)---plus it's odd
that sometimes it "is" seen!

Hello
How have you assigned your IP Addresses. If there is a DHCP server then
there may be need to restart the computer. Or you may obtain the new lease
by doing
"ipconfig /renew " from the command prompt. or
winipcfg -> refresh.

sometimes things get fixed or "reset" if you disable and then enable the
Local Area Connection
(right click, disable, then right clic enable)

I've tried plan B (your plan)...doesn't matter. (plus it took awhile for
the netword to awake again) I'll try plan a, (ipconfig). No, I don't
have IP addresses assigned, seemed more trouble than it was worth?...but
it's odd that I only have a promlem if the laptop is running, then
re-attached to the W2k box. Oddly, out of four times yesterday? It
was detected (without rebooting) twice...

I was looking for a solution similar to "refreshing" stubborn hardware.
As with my mouse? I simply go to the console/hardware and refresh it
if it get buggy (sometimes the wheel isn't fully functional)...I was
hoping a similar method could be applied to the network (MS for Win).

NICs do have a "Power saver" feature in Windows. Perhaps you should disable
those in Device Manager.
