Does anyone know why only the sites typed directly into the browser bar
appear in the drop down box? If you select one from your search engine, or
from a link, it doesn't appear.
Also, where can you adjust the number that appear in drop-down.

This is the stored History of the addresses you typed in the Address Bar.
If your want the see all the pages your went to, including with search
egines, click on the Histroy ticon in the toolbar.

When I hear the word "storied", I won't delve any further. I take it that it
has been discussed in the past, with no real resolution, best left alone. I
was just curious. Seems useless with only half the entries shown.

Hi Happy :-)

Perhaps this may answer your question to some extent:

Address Bar Why some URLs may not show up in the list

That particular feature is an anachronism called TypedURLs.
It is a 25 (max) element list which is maintained in the registry.
You can display it by pressing F4. IIRC it's actually part somehow
of the *old* IE4 AutoComplete.

Elements from that list can be included in the AutoSuggest dropdown
list (the new AutoComplete for Web Addresses). I think that there is
a TweakUI option which clears the list but I'm not sure as I don't use
that tool. In XP I have noticed that it also gets cleared when (I think)
History gets cleared using inetcpl.cpl with iexplore.exe not running.
That is its only association with History that I know of and I think it
is a recent change.

Elements only get added to TypedURLs when something is entered
in the Address bar *and* there is a successful open of what's typed.
We don't know yet if the user is actually entering anything in the
Address bar or if when it is entered a successful open is done.
If neither of those conditions are true then we would have an
explanation for the symptom (blank TypedURLs list).

It is not what the user seems to assume, a History of browsing.
That's the History Explorer bar (Ctrl-H). So if all that is done
is click on links or use the Open dialog (Ctrl-O) nothing would
be shown in the TypedURLs list (F4).

BTW if you enter anything else without a protocol prefix
it may be interpreted as AutoSearch input. Then, if search
from the Address bar is enabled and properly configured
and the search provider accessible and the search responded to,
then the TypedURLs list would be updated but only with the
URL used to create the request. YMMV. ;)

Also, if you want a particular link site to be added to your Dropdown list,
just click the link to open the site, copy the URL in the Address Bar, then
close the site. Then paste the copied URL into the Address Bar and click
GO, then the URL should be added to the dropdown list.

Hope this helps
