This might be off topic, but Im wondering why Windows Onecare Live requires
uninstalling of Norton before installing it?

This really is off topic--I'm unclear whether there are public support
groups for OneCare. If there are, I'll see if I can spot them and steer
people towards them.

I don't know the answer, either--this has not always been the case, but I
suspect that for performance reasons if nothing else, it is better to have
as few concurrent active scanning apps as possible.

There is no public newgroup for onecare that I am aware of yet. OneCare
askes you to remove Norton because it is another AV program and it is not
recommended to have 2 AV programs running on the same machine.

There3 are private newsgroups for One care think you have to get the setup
dope from the Beeta group

The issue here is that the beta is now public at http://windowsonecare.com .
I haven't figured out (guess I should go there and read)--what support there
is for the public beta--typically there would be newsgroups/web groups.

There's a blog to answer the OP's question, at least from the Ms perspective.

a.. Running more than one anti-virus – the general industry consensus is to only
run one anti-virus on a single machine at a time. Although some experts will
have more than one installed, it does require fine-tuning and ongoing
management, so for most users, we (and most in the security industry) recommend
you uninstall any existing anti-virus applications before adding a new one, such
as Windows OneCare Live.

This step is very important no matter what brand of protection software you
use, because installing one antivirus or firewall program over another on
the same computer could potentially lock up the computer.

Windows OneCare might not run, or it might slow the performance of your
computer, if you install it when other antivirus or firewall programs are
also installed on your computer. During Setup, Windows OneCare checks for
the some common antivirus and firewall programs that are known to conflict
with Windows OneCare and provides means for you to uninstall them.

Antivirus and firewall programs known to conflict with Windows OneCare:

a.. Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005
b.. Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005
c.. Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2005
d.. McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005
e.. McAfee VirusScan 8.0/2004
f.. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
During Setup, Windows OneCare checks for the programs listed above and will
notify you to uninstall any that are found. To avoid any potential problems,
however, Windows OneCare recommends that you uninstall any other antivirus
and firewall software (except for Windows Firewall, which is part of the
Windows XP operating system and cannot be uninstalled) before beginning
Windows OneCare installation.

Hmm. It looks nice, but does it do anything?

I don't like the firewall in OneCare for portable devices--it lacks the
"exclude all" checkbox that is present in the SP2 Windows firewall. I think
this makes it less secure than its predecessor, and you can't easily turn it
off and revert to the standard firewall controls.

The antivirus is average or better I think. It seems to be more responsive
to new bugs than some, but there are rather old Proof of Concept
"containers"--ways of hiding a virus inside a packed file--which they don't
yet handle, last I checked.

Backup is pretty useless in a networked office situation, but good for a
standalone user--gonna boost the sales of DVD writers and external drives, I
think.

I've had no useful response except "future consideration" for my complaint
about the firewall. I think it is outrageous to produce a new product which
makes a laptop less secure when travelling than the product it replaces.
