Why, oh why?

Why in god's name are high end graphics cards so expensive? I know it's
cutting edge technology and all but there comes a point when having to pay
£350+ for a single PCB just to play the latest computer game begins to just
take the piss.

Well if you have to be on the bleeding edge then you have to pay the
money... but if you are willing to wait then you can save money...
last summer the 9800 Pro XT was ATI king of the hill...this summer it
is still a good card and a lot cheaper...in 6 months Doom3 will be
yesterdays news and will go on sale... so if you are willing to wait
you can save money...

Considering that graphic cards are nearly like an entire computer
(processor chip, memory, circuit board, bus architecture and cooling)
I guess $150 sounds reasonable. A high-end video card ($350+) is
intended for those $3500+ high-end computers. I wonder who's buying
all these computer games (Doom 3 and such) and what kind of system
they have. I stay away from the latest software, else my poor
computer crawls. :(

Only 10% of a gaming system price for a video card? More like 20-25%
would seem reasonable. A 10% figure would be more reasonable for a
system not used for heavy gaming. Those who aren't doing heavy gaming
(or other intensive 3d work) wouldn't buy a $300+ video card.

It's the memory prices. High end graphics cards use much more.
Processors and mainboards cost less than memory! I don't know why.

So 20 to 80 bucks of ram drives up the cost to several hundred
ollars? -Dave

The latest graphics chips have more transistors in them than a Pentium 4
CPU, thats why they are so expensive. Stay 2 generations behind, you can get
a excellent card for around 200.00$ US and you can play all the latest
games, including Doom 3, which sucks anyway.

Money to blow. Money to burn.
Oh, the yearn
of it.
Ah shit...that guy next door has something faster
brighter, bigger...
Not to be his Wigger!
Cool. Rad. Gotta get buff.
But to find it sux,
After all them bucks,
And it's the same lousy game as before,
just makeup on a whore.

But what do ya' do,
I ain't 'bout to get locked out of no playground in the 'hood.
And so, I got money to blow, money to burn...
and oh, the yearn
of it.
Ah shit...mine will always be smaller.
