Why no 400 GB HDs?

I am running low on hard disk space again so I looked at the listings on
PriceWatch and I was surprised to see that the largest hard drives
listed were 300 GB. I had assumed that 400 GB (or bigger) drives would
be available by now.

I also noticed that the 300 GB drives were all Maxtors with 2 meg
caches. That means that they have only one year warranties doesn't it?

Are drive manufacturers having trouble making large drives that are
reliable enough to warrant them for three years now days? Thank you in
advance for all replies.

To the best of my knowledge it has nothing to do with reliability
Hard drive manufacturers have been cutting back
their warranties from 3 years to 1 year to cut costs.

For most people a 120GB or 160GB will do the job
So a 300GB to 400GB hard drive would have a very limited demand.

Hitachi has announced a 400 GB model, the Deskstar 7K400. It's a 7200 RPM
drive with an 8 MB buffer.

Google on the model. You'll get many hits.

I don't know where you can buy one. Also, the drive uses five 80 GB
platters, so it's not a new, super high density drive.

I read about this driver. It's suppose to be a little over 400US$
Might as well wait a year and it will be half the price and you end up
with better/faster drives.

Of course it does.

Costs that wouldn't actually occur if harddrives were actually so reliable.
