I came across a very strange problem recently. I have a IBM iseries PIII 700
laptop and did not use it for maybe two months, last week when I turn it on
I discovered that the memory size reduced to 184m which was 384m before. and
when i check the CPU freqency, it became 5xx or 4xx which was 747M before.I
am using winXP.

Any one can tell me what could be the possible reason for this?

Thanks!

The speed might be due to lost CMOS settings and you need to
change the battery... it's about that age where it might
need it, I mean the lithium cell, not the battery pack.

After changing the battery, load the bios defaults and see
if the memory is detected. If not, pull out the main
battery pack, unplug the power adapter and remove the
memory, examine the contacts and reinstall it.

Are you checking these settings in BIOS or Windows System Information?
I realized my Sony laptop was giving the same misleading information in
Windows XP Home but the Sony manual told me that was normal and would
only show what it was using (or some bull like that). Check BIOS for
true reading.
