Why must I reboot before main computer will see network on 2nd computer?

If I reboot my main computer after I've started up the 2nd computer (simple
LAN- one cable connection between the two computers) I have no problem
seeing the 2nd computer and transfering files between the two. But more
commonly the 1st computer is on 24 hours and the 2nd computer gets shut off
when it's not being used. Then I have the situation where I start up the
2nd computer and I can't transfer files because it isn't recognized on the
network. I have to reboot the 1st computer before the 2nd one will be
recognized by the 1st.

Is there a reason for this, or a solution? It's probably a simple switch
somewhere I haven't set up properly, but I'm pretty new to networks so I'm
not sure where to start.

Appreciate any help,

John

Hi John,
If I understand you correctly you have these 2 systems connected with a
Cross over cable? Would that be correct, there is no Hub or other network
devices?

If that is the case, on the system that is online 24 hours a day, I
suggest following this article and see if you still have the same problem..
