Hi,
When i create a new contact and add the fax number I get a 2nd listing in
the Contacts list. Is there a way to prevent this ?

I'm guessing that you mean that the contact shows up multiple times in the
address book since you added a fax number. That's normal since Outlook
considers fax numbers valid electronic addresses (since Outlook can
interface with some fax programs). If you want to 'hide' the number from the
address book try adding an alphabetic character to the fax number

This may be a work-around for some people but I use Outlook 03 contacts in
Symantec WinFax Pro. Winfax will not recognize a fax number with alphabetic
character or a fax number under any other heading as you suggested in another
post. I can live with this problem but it is irritating. Is someone trying
to fix this issue? Can't someone just tell the address book not to look in
the Fax number field and give an option when sending an Internet fax to look
in email address field for @ followed by 7 numbers??? I don't know squat
about programming Outlook but 30 years using databases tells me it can't be
that hard. I mean no disrespect to you Vince I am sure you are as frustrated
about this as the rest of us but you gotta appease us whiners :<) If there
ain’t no fix, at least tell me someone is working on it (even if it ain’t
true:<)

There is nothing to fix.
Outlook is operating as designed.
Outlook considers fax numbers to be valid electronic addresses, since there
are many client- and server-based components that can use such addresses.
Indeed, you seem to be saying two things. You want your fax numbers
recognized as such, right?

Yes. And they are currently recognized as fax numbers.
Obviously if you think there is nothing to fix I am wasting my time
answering this thread. I will live with the unorganized email address window
until someone gets their head out. It is not worth my time to reorganize all
my contacts with fax numbers so you can say the issue is resolved. Get a
life. I can't believe a couple minor adjustments to the Addresses window
would not fix the problem. How about putting both the real email address and
the wrongly perceived fax/email address on the same line and give the option
to not show (or otherwise use) the fax column when sending email?

Holster your weapon. Do you always shoot the messenger?
All I did was explain how Outlook is designed and why. Hard to understand
how that created the need for your personal attack.
Most users when they realize that a design is intentional but does not
happen to meet their specific needs look for alternative ways to do what
they want. And you have plenty.
Anyone who has used Outlook for more than 5 minutes realizes that the
Outlook Address Book is an interface that has been deprecated and is not
intended to be the primary interface for selecting recipients. It is a
legacy for those who remain attached to an "address book" interface.
Instead, Outlook has focused development on other methods for selecting
recipients such as:
1. Customized views of Contacts Folders
2. Autoresolution
3. Autocompletion
4. Categories
If you can't figure out a way to accomplish what you want, post a specific
question and see if someone else has figured out a way. If there are none,
post a suggestion to Microsoft.
What I am telling you is not to hold your breath waiting for the Outlook
Address Book to undergo any further changes or development. It relies on an
old, legacy transport to which changes are not easily made and it hasn't
been changed one bit in the 8 years and 5 versions of Outlook. That's just
what is, and it's not my fault.

As you know there are a couple of good utilities out there (for $10 and
$19.95 respectively) which automatically change the fax listing in the
Contacts by adding a letter or "Fax" so that the software doesn't pick it up
when doing bulk mail sends. It's really an inexpensive solution to the
situation. Many people want to send out both emails and faxes - but for
those who don't, there are utilities. Your writer can check the threads in
this area from back in May. The links (albeit outdated) are listed there.
The two links will forward users to the correct URLs.
