Why did MS create two different IM's?

Surely, not to confuse everyone, especially those of us
on Win XP!! I don't understand why MS don't just focus
on one IM. Put all their resouces on one IM and make
sure it works on all environments. A lot less hassle for
everyone and much easier to support.

Maybe then, we will get a IM, that really works!!

Comments anyone??

I understand that this won't be the case for everyone but
i like the way there are two messengers because for me
atleast MSN messenger messes up my pc whenever i install
it and stops both windows messenger and itself from
working, but because i have windows messenger i can just
use that instead. besides they both pretty much od the
same things and you can talk someone on windows msgr from
on msn msgr so what are all the complaints about.
(rhetorical question).

He's just one of those annoying people that heard that MS
was all that is evil and decided it would be fun to jump
on the bandwagon.

Why not just combine them to make a single IM?
ie. "Intergration". A single IM with a complete range of
features. Surely a single IM is easier to develop and
support?

Having two IM's just causes more confusing. Just look at
the no. of people who get confused over whether they are
using MSN Messeneger or Windows Messneger. A lot of
people don't even know the differences!!

"More confusion to an already confusing world"

Just expressing a point a view! I'm sure that there are
a lot of people who also agree with me.

Greetings Sam,

Actually they were separate clients until MSN Messenger
5 and Windows Messenger 4.7. MSN
Messenger is centered around MSN technologies (Hotmail,
MSN Member Profiles, MSN Mobile,
etc.) whereas Windows Messenger 4.x (and the upcoming 5) is centered around Windows
technologies (Exchange Server, Greenwich/RTC Server,
Windows Netmeeting, etc.). However,
both make use of Microsoft .NET technologies, like
the .NET Messenger network, .NET Passport,

Nice answer, I was just about to ask whether Windows Messenger was being
discontinued or not.
