why microsoft is not porting the CLR to unix ,linux and mac?
Sun ported the jvm and sdk on all major platform. That fuiled the popularity
of java.It is time microsoft port atleast the clr to other platform(if
needed the sdk also!) on its own rather than relying any third party for
doing so(mono etal).
It will be benificial for the framework itself .

Sun needed to port the JVM to Windows in order to make it available to
the vast majority of developers. (The Linux port only came much later,
mostly due to the Blackdown project.)

As MS's .NET framework is already available on the platform most of the
target developers are using, there's less reason to port it to other
platforms - and doing so would make it easier for users to move from
Windows to those platforms.

Hi,

There was a LONG thread last week regarding this, take a look at a thread
named "why microsoft is not porting the CLR" started around 08/11

Cheers,

see the thread titled:
Re: Why did Microsoft limited itself to Windows?

That's a very long thread, but it covers your question directly.
