How To Ask Questions The Smart Way

hth

There have been 4 post by different people in the past few days speaking of
the XP theme disappearing after the last MS Update.

It seems to come and go but basically is one form or another of what I've
listed below...

I have ms plus installed but was just using the default XP for my display.
Last week after an MS Update my display went into a "modified theme" and
the plus themes as well as the XP theme were no longer available in
"Display Properties". A system restore corrected this.
The same thing happened after yesterdays update only this time I cannot
use the system restore, all attempts have failed.
Any suggestions.

When I Restarted the XP themes were gone again but they were in the themes
folder. I received an error message stating the theme service was not
running and so I tried to start it in the Computer Management Administrative
Tool in the Control Panel.

I then got Error 998:Invalid access to memory location

If a question goes unanswered, that generally means no one knows the answer
or can provide a troubleshooting idea.

My original post body, like the others, listed the specific problem. I
didn't see the need to re-write it.
The first from Chet reply answered the question I posted in the header here.
I just thought that with at least 4 postings of the same problem, coupled
with what seemed to be a good source of topic specific knowledgeable people,
that one of you MS geniuses (and I don't mean that sarcastically) would have
a simple solution or at least a suggestion.
I must admit my ignorance about this forum until Chet kindly pointed it out.
From reading some of the responses here I actually thought that the site was
moderated by MS personnel.
