I am careful to defrag, get rid of files I don't need, I turn off and restart daily, I have tried everything recommended in Help and yet my system is so slow to open anything at all. Once open, things improve. What am I doing wrong?

I am also having similar problems. I have been told by
the IT guy at work that it is because of the updates.
Each update you download slows down the system. He
recommended getting rid of the updates and returning the
system to its original state. I am curious to know if
there is one good patch that covers everything and
therefore reduces the need to take extra time to
reference.

There is not a single patch that covers everything.
You need to do two things:
1. Start here to see if this helps performance:

2. Get another IT guy to give you advice, the computer may run
faster, but the computer will be unprotected from a wide variety of
issues many of which will cause much worse performance issues than you
are seeing now.
His advice is exceptionally dangerous.

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? In Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select Properties.

How much RAM memory? Have you allowed Windows to manage your memory without the introduction of any memory managers. Memory managers can lead to poor system performance!

Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and use it to remove parasites.

How good is your housekeeping?

1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.

2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.

3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.

4. Run Disk Defragmenter.

You should investigate whether you have unnecessary programmes loading at start up / running in background. This a big topic. Start by telling us about the Norton products you are using. There are a number of potential areas of conflict.

Are you using Microsoft Office? If yes, which version?
The key information is the Event ID and the source!

Look in Event Viewer at the logged errors and post them here and you may get some answers. The key information is the Event ID, the source and description of error!

Hope this helps.
