Why is MyComputer so slow in WinXP

I recently upgraded from Win98SE to WinXP Pro and find
that when I click on My Computer and then double-click on
a folder, the "flashlight" waggles back and forth for up
to several minutes before displaying the contents of the
folder.

I believe this is related to another problem I am
encountering, which is that when I do File | Save As or
File | Open and then select another folder, the machine
seems to lock up for several minutes, eventually giving
an error message that another application is in use and
prompting me to "switch to" some other application, but
when I click on "switch to" the Start Menu comes up
without any clue as to what process I should switch to.
Also, Task Manager doesn't display any other programs in
use.

What's happening here, and how do I fix it?

Thanks

This is not a behavior characteristic to Windows XP. Something else is
causing your problem.

Shinken,

When you click Start and then click My Computer, or when you double-click My
Computer on your Windows desktop, Windows may search (a flashlight may
appear) for a long time (for example, 5 minutes) before files appear.

Disable the Windows Image Acquisition service.

If this does not help, uninstall 821557 hotfix
