I was viewing my ports with Port Explorer and the same IP address keeps
comming up, 65.55.158.80. So I did a lookup on the internet and it's
Microsoft.!! What information do they retreive from my computer and what do
I receive from them; Is it just statistics or are they actually spying on
me?

thanks,

Shaun

Most likely it is the Event Viewer Reporting service. The service is
there to offer advice about problems on your computer. You need to fix
the problems and not shoot the messenger.

Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for
Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48
hours ago.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

At this very moment, Microsoft is selling your personal information to a
band of thugs.

Your right. I looked at my event viewer and there are a bunch of errors and
warnings. Tomorrow I'll copy and paste them here.
question. Does microsoft attempt to fix issues remotely or is my computer
just reporting a problem?

thanks,

Shaun

This is the Microsoft Event Viewer Reporting Service Privacy Statement
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/dcp20.asp

With Windows XP the service provides the user with known information.

Access to this information can be gained by clicking on this link in any
Event Viewer Report
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The link only works on the computer generating the Report.

The problem with responses has historically been that the support
information database has never matched the capacity of the Reporting
Service to generate queries. Thus you often get a "No information"
response. The answers provided can be substantial but their relevance
can often be questionable. The time delay from Microsoft receiving the
Report or Reports and determining a solution is uncertain By the time
the analysis of a new error is complete and the answer published months
/ years can pass. The volume of Reports received by Microsoft is so
large that they must prioritise. They do not provide responses to
individual reports after analysis of the problem.

The Reporting Service in Windows XP is primarily about collection of
data. Recently there have been hints that Microsoft is wanting to move
towards a remote fix service but it is probably years off providing a
comprehensive service. You can see changes in that direction to the
service in Vista.

Hey guys,

Well I threw in the towel and reformated my C: drive. I tried to do a
windows repair but it doesn't work very well and I still had errors
afterwards. Fortunately I had partitioned my hard drive and all my data
and install programs are on the second partition. All I had to do is
reformat 20 Gb, install windows, install drivers, restore my emails and
well there thousands of other things I have to do before I'm back to where I
was before getting the rootkits.

Thanks for you help.

Shaun
