Why is IE6 corrupting perfectly good web pages?

I am a site designer, and for four years have had the same site that I
have regularly checked on every browser out there - IE, Opera, Safari,
Netcsape, Omniweb, iCab, Mozilla, Firebird, Camino, they all worked
perfectly. All pages are made from simply tiled jpegs, and it was built
using Fireworks and Dreamweaver in 2000. For four years it displayed
flawlessly. Yesterday I had an opportunity to check it on a friend's
brand new Dell with XP and presumeably the latest version of IE - all
the tiles now display 'cracks' or seams between them and my web site is
a total mess. I have changed nothing in four years, but clearly you
have. Why has this happened? Why should I bother to respond to new
flaws in your coding?

Maybe your mate didn't have his IE setup correctly.

Maybe you need to test it with more browsers on other machines

Maybe you need to check and see if you had installed your IE (and other
browsers) properly

There are a million other explanations without just blaming Microsoft

Hmmm... What setup affects how pages are rendered?

See list above. Also, this site displayed perfectly on SGI Irix w/
Netscape, Sun Solaris browsers, Linux browsers, Macintoshes running
OS9 and X, and PC's running Win95, 98, 2000, and NT. It was plain
HTML with no weird tags and no FrontPage extensions.

As I said, what part of an untouched out-of-the-box Dell laptop
installation could affect browser page rendering?

Perhaps you're right. Can anyone help? I'm not trying to start a flame
war, just looking for a reason as to why something that worked
perfectly now doesn't.

Video acceleration? Dry dropping it a notch or two.

Video or other driver? See if more up-to-date drivers are available.

Display setting? I've seen some posts suggesting that IE likes 96dpi.

Software that destabilizes Windows? Some software, especially software that
digs into the guts of the O/S, destabilizes Windows, and IE6 is very
sensitive to small instabilities.
