Why is Gannt Chart adding the total of duration column?

Instead of using the largest number of days of work as usual, the Gannt Chart
is changing some of my columns to the sum of all the days listed in Duration
(not Work), so I get totals in the thousands, while other columns are posted
correctly using the largest number of days under the task.
