Why in HADES is RAMBUS so expensive this side of the pond?!

I want to upgrade a Dell 8250 with another 512MB. It takes RIMMs and the
cheapest I can find this side of the Great Divide is £287 - I visited a US
site (www.4allmemory.com) and I could purchase the same amount for about
£132 (inc tax and FedEx to the UK). OK, I understand that, if it's imported
then duty might account for some of it - but more than *double*?!

Any ideas?! I'd purchase from the US, but then if it didn't work I'd have
all the hassle of sending it back.

Thanks

http://www.dabs.com/uk/search.htm?searchPhrase=rimm
2x 256MB PC1066 - 170 UKP (known quality - Kingston)

http://www.4allmemory.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.memorySearch&model_id=-71
ditto 220 USD inc. shipping + VAT + 5.5% CC surcharge = approx. 170 UKP
(unknown quality)

Try comparing like with like.

I just bit the bullet and to save the hassle bought my additional
RAMBUS RIMM from Dell direct. I emailed a request, they faxed me a
quote, and delivered by post the day after I accepted the quote.
I forget the price now, but it was very little more that the cheapest
US, Singapore or Malaysian price I found, after conversion to Oz
dollars plus adding pack and post. Mind you, that's Dell Oz - from my
experience anything that costs a $ in Oz costs a £ in the UK :(
