Why I miss Win XP

Compare:

Starfield screensaver: you are Captain Kirk!

Bubbles screensaver: you are in a bubble bath!?

WHY!? Why did Microsoft remove Starfield screensaver!? Couldn't it
peacefully co-exist with Bubbles?

Seriously!

Fer chrissake, just copy it from your Windows XP system into the
C:\Windows\System32 folder in Vista, Windows 7, or (probably) Windows 8.

Yes! YES! Everybody should just do this NOW! :)

(but why should that be necessary? That is my question!)

Was part of Norton Comander under DOS v.3

I still run, still use, Norton Commander under XP over 4DOS.

PIF
CMD LINE:C:\UTIL\NC.EXE

PIF settings (advanced under above icon)
c:\dos\4nt\!NC.BAT
%SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\CONFIG.NT

[!NC.BAT]
rem %SystemRoot%\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT
set comspec=c:\dos\4nt\4nt.exe
PATH=C:\DOS\4NT;C:\UTIL;s:\UTIL;s:\DOS;C:\COM\ARC;s:\COM\ARC
c:\dos\4nt\4nt.exe
c:\dos\4nt\keystack.exe
rem alias /r c:\dos\4nt\aliases.txt
rem /la /c /q

Maybe not quite as much, not with a full or seamless4DOS
functionality, just well enough to get along with other older
programs, old enough that they altogether won't function under Windows
CMD. Really fishy at bottom of the toilet bowl type KLUDGE, I
suppose, if you must know.

No point in sticking to NC when native windows app
Total Commander is available. Which does everything
NC ever did plus a hell of a lot more.

I use Turbo Navigator interchangeably with Total Commander (Ultima
Prime), except simpler for the former to optionally configure. ZTree
for Windows/NT (updated from XTree Gold) is another old one for
occasions - very unique ways of manipulating files/LFN spanning an
entire drives. That's four very classicals

Norton as an extension to 4DOS has some unique aspects - tons
(2-3hundred) of odds&ends utilities, unix ASCII manipulation text
ports to DOS. I can still print large document in book from a dot
matrix as an alternative prior to WordStar. (Some below w/out
descriptors are such ports from *nix flavors). Of course, for those
that do, many of these simple utilities also wouldn't work. Lots of
options, nevertheless, ways of going at things. ...Unique,
differently, somewhat distanced, needn't necessarily always be so
quaint. Actually as much a shame to cut them loose, since I already
know most of them well. Nor takes much in the way of a token logical
partition, under five hundred megs, to keep a core residual of what
once was a world to itself. (...quick grab/bag of a few samplings
following...)
