I will put Vista on one machine, the gaming machine, because it will
have DX10, unless, of course, someone figures out how to get DX10 to
work on XP ;-)

They will figure it out, they always do.

Of course, they've also figured it how to get
Vista for free, too. Might not be much need for
DirectX 10 on XP.

Having a DX 10 card installed is one thing, but what about games? No DX 10
games are ready which means your games will be running just the same as they
did under DX 9. I am buying mainly because, I want to have the latest, I
like the out of box value, you are getting apps you are likely to use and
its good looking.

When ie4 came out you could install it on windows 95 and select the gui
upgrade...
after a long wait and reboots that installed had integrated internet
explorer to the shell
and transformed win95 into a win98 like machine.
In other words it is possible to make an installer that will greatly change
and upgrade an OS. So I think if microsoft wanted they could have made
directX for winXP.
They would have to upgrade various aspects of XP.
But I dont think they want to do that.... its not a real technical
limitation... but a marketing limitaion. If everyone could make XP do
everything vista can then no one would buy vista would they?
The same thing applies to win2000... they want to fade out that product. No
wmp11 (or even 10 for that matter) for it.. no live messenger and no ie7. I
am sure win2k could handle those applications though....
This is a kill on purpose. I am not saying its bad or good... I am just
saying that it exists.

I should have added "after Vista has SP2" and the games for DX10 come out.

I waited until late 03 for XP. I will wait for SP2 for Vista if I even
buy it so, no, I will not want the latest and greatest.

You don't want Vista for gaming. The video and Audio drivers aren't ready and
a lot of apps like Teamspeak and Vent have problems with it.

And the DX10 games and hardware are still the minority.

Like I said, I *may* buy it *after* SP2 for Vista is released.
