Why i am not able create a folder named "con" in Windows Os

One one friends last evening showed me that in windows 98 i am not able
to create a folder with name "con" ...I give a error message dialog...
In windows Xp When i type "con" and press enter it just changes folder
name to "folder"...

What is technical reason behind it .....

It is a reserved name like AUX and has been that way since the DOS days.

"con" means "console", and it's a reserved name.
