Why having to type complete address?

Just today I started having to type the complete internet
address for a site I want to go to
(e.g. "http://www.mapquest.com") instead of just the
short name ("mapquest.com"). The only thing that I did
is I tried one of those system/internet washers to clean
up my system (temp files, old histories, ect.), and then
this happened. I used one before and it didn't do this.
So I'd appreciate any help that anyone can be! :)

My guess is that when you used the washer you erased all
cookies therefore they will not be placed back in until
after you visit the site again. Try going to a site, then
surf awhile, close the browser then try just typing your
old way and see if it "finds" it.

Regards
Mike

First eliminate any scumware.
See
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

From Mike Burgess.

Verify the following entries are correct in the Registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"
