Why has Microsoft decided to remove SIP functionality in
6.0? I use MSN to connect to friends not on MSN, but if I
upgrade to 6.0 this will not be possible. Is MS trying to
force everyone onto windows messenger and monopolise IM?

Greetings Mark,

The SIP functionality was also removed from MSN Messenger 5 and continues to not be present
in MSN Messenger 6. This was primarily done due to the split within the Messenger clients --
MSN Messenger uses MSN technologies, like MSN Hotmail, MSN Mobile, MSN Profiles, etc.
whereas Windows Messenger uses Windows technologies, like Exchange and RTC Server (which is
the SIP-based Communication Service that Microsoft is on the verge of releasing). As such,
Windows Messenger (which next version will work on Windows 2000 as well, to another your
other post about forcing users to upgrade to XP) is the client that supports Exchange IM and
SIP.
