Why don't my calendar REMINDERS work anymore?

I have been using reminders for years with no problem. Now they don't appear
as little bell symbols on the calendar and never pop-up.
 
If you open one of the items that should have a reminder set on it and reset
it and save the item.... does the reminder fire?
