why doesn't my computer run a disk clean-up when prompted to do so?

when I try to do a disk clean-up... It ask which drive I want cleaned and I select the correct one. then Sometimes the window just closes and at other times it says to wait while it calculates how much disk space I can free-up and then It just sits there. I know it should take a few minutes; butyou can leave it overnight and it still doesn't do any thing. this problem has just resently arisen.
