Why does XP OS installation load so many drivers?

I've installed XP on several machines. I notice that the
OS installation program "examines the system" before it
begins copying files, but that it seems to load the same
set of drivers no matter what's actually present in the
machine. Some of these appear to be for hardware that's
not present - USB keyborads, SCSI drives, etc. Is there a
way to speed up installation by getting the installer to
make better choices of how it spends my time? Or does XP
need all that stuff?

Quinn, you could try Start>Run type: msconfig and see what you can do
without on Startup.

Windows XP copies over all drivers so that they will be there in the future
if you need them. This way, when you install a new piece of hardware, it
doesn't need to ask you for a CD. You attach something and it just works.
However, these drivers are not actually loaded or used, they are just there
in case they are needed.
