Two examples:
1) I open Windows Explorer from the same shortcut every time. I do not
use more than 10 applications, including things like notepad, on this
system. Explorer pops up 9/10 times with the same window location and
dimensions as the last time, but 1/10 times starts off as a any other
new window of default size and location. I can launch it 10 times over
a week or 10 times in a half hour, but 1 in 10 will cause it to forget
its settings.
2) I use WinTV2000 with my Hauppage tuner card one to three times a day.
Like Explorer, it normally remembers its dimensions and location, but
1/20 times it appears to forget. The window is 1/8 normal size and
located far from its normal location. Since I use it so much, 1/20
times equates to having to fix the settings every week.
I thought that it might have something to do with DirectX games and
windows forgetting what resolution the screen is at, but I've ruled that
out. Both that I have stopped playing my games for a few weeks and that
I can do the experiment with the Explorer described above tell me that
games are not involved. Why does windows forget window settings?
