Why does Word XP try to access Internet (per ZoneAlarm) on launch?

I have the latest free version of ZoneAlarm. Sometimes, but not always, When I open Word XP (Word 2002 SP-2), I receive a request from ZoneAlarm (my software firewall, running resident) asking me if I want to let Windword.exe have access to the Internet. I click "no" and thereafter Word functions normally, as far as I know. I don't think this access request is for "update" checking purposes. Any other reason Word XP might want to access the Internet upon being launched? Nella

Why don't you change ZA's Program Control from ? to X for
WinWord?

I have done that, just to stop ZoneAlarm from asking me; thanks for confirming my thought process

I'm curious, however, as to why this program is seeking internet access, i.e., is there a legitimate reason it might be asking for this access or is this a sign of a "bad actor" on my computer. I hope I solve the mystery; otherwise it will be one of many eternal windows questions (like why use the start button to shut down). Nella.

I've noticed the same behavior from Windows 2000 and Excel 2000 running
on XP.
I use the personal edition of ZoneAlarm on my home computer,
but I use a different program at work (Win98 at home, XP at
work).

The only thing I can tell you is at home, I've set all
programs to ? or X for server (I've never been asked for
permission) and most programs are ? for Access Internet.
So, when Word accesses the internet, it has to ask me for
permission and I know why it's asking. The reason is that
I've copied something off of a web page that I'm pasting
into Word and it needs to access the web to do it.

I have no idea why Excel would need to access the internet.

If you have Norton Anti Virus installed and the Office Plug-in option
enabled (under NAV, Options), when you open Word or Excel (or any of the
other Office Applications), it will try to access the Internet to verify the
authenticity of Norton's Verisign Certificate - which went out of date on 7
January.
